Scarlett Swells
Sheâs a strumpet. This is not putting things mildly. She has held sway over men since she was old enough to bat her eyes. I think the entire second grade male population of P.S. 44 fell in love with her, and she has been going strong ever since.
You know how cosmetics are supposed to enhance a womanâs sex appeal? Mascara, lipstick, and stuff? Scarlett never even uses powder. Her face looks perfect, and her eyes seem to gleam, even in the dark. How does she get her lips to be so pink? And no one calls those specks on her face freckles. Oh, no. Those little flecks just call out for men to touch her cheeks!
She doesnât even have red hair. I would call it dirty blonde, and that is the truth. But it looks better on her than the auburn hair on movie stars. Scarlett does that hair justice. I donât think she even uses curlers or anything. That hair just billows down around her shoulders. Those big green eyes donât hurt things, either.
Scarlett got a bust before the rest of us knew what a bra was for. And some of us still donât have hips we can swing around, but Scarlett knows how to strut. It is just unnerving the way men, including my brothers, salivate whenever Scarlett walks by.
Now it isnât fair to call her a strumpet without some proof. Well, I have seen her take money from men with my own eyes. And she doesnât charge them or anything. All she has to do is give them a kiss and they shower her with money and gifts. One time, she fainted in church, and the minister sent her flowers!
She has always had strings of boyfriends. Just stacks of them. The rest of us are lucky to get one at a time, but Scarlett needs a schedule for hers. One time she went to breakfast with one man, lunch with another one, and dinner with somebody else! And she has stayed in plenty of hotels, let me tell you.
I have discussed this with my mother. Mom says that Scarlett isnât that exceptional, really. Mom says that some people can write poetry, and some people can do math problems real fast. Scarlett can get men. Itâs a talent. We are all given talents. Itâs our job to figure out what our talents are and then develop them. Like Mom says that I have talent for growing things. She says I would make a really good farmer or florist. And Scarlett just makes men want to give her things.
Hereâs the thing: I hate dirt. Hereâs another thing: I hate Scarlett. One more thing: I think Scarlett is going to marry my Daddy. After the divorce.
